Emily Berens

Emily launched Trellis Strategies to help social change organizations build the healthy, strong teams they need to make their biggest impact. This work builds on Emily’s more than two decades of experience coaching and teaching executives and leaders to build resilient and effective teams, and directly managing teams herself.

Emily spent nearly a decade as a coach and Partner with The Management Center (TMC), supporting leaders of some of the top social change organizations in the country through many of their toughest management challenges. She also led the talent and hiring processes for TMC in their inaugural talent lead role, focused in particular on re-creating the hiring systems across the organization to make them more inclusive and equitable. By the end of her three years in that role, the organization had tripled in size and had made major advancements in building a more racially diverse team at the same time that they were working to create a more inclusive and equitable internal culture across the organization.

Before joining TMC, Emily co-founded Fundación En Vía, a nonprofit microfinance organization in Oaxaca, Mexico that gives small, interest-free loans to women living in poverty. Prior to that, Emily worked with multiple organizations recruiting, managing, and training organizers, raising money, and organizing nationally and internationally on environmental, human rights, and corporate accountability campaigns.

Fluent in English and Spanish, Emily is the mother of two (adorable) kids, and is a self-professed gardening nerd.
